The star has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 award cash to the trust for venues, which works to save the UK's small concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the prize on mid-October as his new release the album was chosen as the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

The musician has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues played in his initial steps.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," stated the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians like Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation assisted spaces that were facing possible closure due to issues arising from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and sound issues.

Other venues received monetary aid in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped musicians and audiences.

"The idea that funds from shows in major spaces supports the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has commented.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his honor prize money to good deeds.

Back when they received the prize in 1996 for their release Different Class, vocalist Cocker announced that the act would donate their cash to the charity War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her bounty between multiple organizations, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also contributed a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed updated gear," the artist told outlets.

In recent years, they donated their prize money to the community center that developed their group, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And the 1994 recipients the group gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was ample," stated singer Heather Small. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory affected another person's life."

Recently, the trust announced it had protected several local spots in that region, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in that area and the second in that location were acquired under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is backed by the arts council and supporters who purchase "shares" in the venues.
